Not Enough Kittens Slot Review: Rules, Features and RTP

Not Enough Kittens game artwork by Thunderkick

Not Enough Kittens lets one reel position represent more than one symbol. Thunderkick’s laboratory theme is reflected in doubled cats and Wilds, allowing a five-reel line to contain a longer counted combination without physically adding more reels. Free Spins make Wilds stacked, while single and double Scatters determine bonus access. The useful distinction is between symbol count and occupied screen positions, rather than treating every double as an unrelated multiplier.

Main featuresCats and Wilds can count as doubles; a Wild on a paying cat line doubles single cats; single or double Scatters trigger Free Spins; up to six Scatters award twenty-five spins; bonus Wilds are stacked.

RTP and stake limits can vary by version and market. Check the information screen in the game you open. Maximum win is a ceiling, not an expected result.

Five positions can count beyond five symbols

The layout has five reels and three rows with thirty-five fixed paylines. Coloured yarn occupies the lower paytable, with cats in boxes providing the premium symbols. Some cats can appear as doubles in one position. The screen does not become a six- or ten-reel game: the doubled icon changes the count used by an eligible line combination while occupying the same single box on its original reel.

Wilds substitute for ordinary symbols except Scatters. A paying cat line containing a Wild can turn single cats into double symbols, and the relevant Wild also counts as double under the feature rules. This allows counted combinations of up to ten across five positions. The payoff follows the applicable counted-combination entry in the paytable, so it should not be reduced to the assumption that every event simply doubles the same ordinary five-symbol prize.

Scatters can also arrive in pairs

Three or more Scatters trigger Free Spins. Because Scatters can be single or double, their total count can exceed the number of reels on which they occupy positions. Up to six Scatters award twenty-five spins. Count the symbols represented, rather than assuming one box always contributes exactly one to the trigger. The same distinction explains why an opening award may be larger than expected from a quick glance at only the occupied positions.

During Free Spins, Wilds appear stacked, creating broader coverage on their reels and more opportunities to assist paying cat lines. The double-symbol rules continue to apply, and qualifying further Scatters can retrigger the feature. A stacked Wild does not remove the need for a valid left-to-right matching line, however. Its coverage may help several paths while other positions still prevent those paths from completing a paying combination.

Counting rules matter more than a full-looking screen

The laboratory’s most useful idea is making the ordinary paytable respond to more than one symbol in a position. A double cat and a Wild-assisted single cat can both affect the eventual count, but they are not permission to count every visible cat twice regardless of participation. Follow the particular paying line and the relevant Wild before applying the transformation. That keeps the unusual count separate from the familiar five-reel geometry.

The current official page lists 96.1% RTP and Low volatility, with the exact operator description corroborating a maximum of 3,650 times the stake. Low volatility does not guarantee a return on each spin or a productive stacked-Wild feature. The active paytable remains important because its longer counted combinations determine the reward. Keep the maximum number of counted symbols, maximum Scatter count and overall payout ceiling as three separate limits.

Strengths and weak points

Strengths

Double symbols give the laboratory theme a meaningful rule rather than a cosmetic role. Stacked bonus Wilds interact naturally with cat doubling, while double Scatters make the trigger count visibly different from reel count.

Weaknesses

Counting can be misread if every occupied position is treated as one symbol or every cat as automatically doubled. Stacked Wilds still need eligible lines, and the Low volatility label does not guarantee frequent profitable results.

Our Editor’s View

Not Enough Kittens is a characterful fixed-line game whose distinction lies in counting symbols rather than expanding the grid. Its strongest interaction is using Wild participation to turn an ordinary cat line into a longer counted combination. The limitation is the need to apply that rule to the correct line and paytable entry. Read double Scatters separately, keep physical positions and counted symbols distinct, and judge bonus coverage through its completed combinations.
